Fraser Kidd Research report
Animation is popular way of filmmaking it first began during
the early years of filmmaking but during the 1920s to the 1960s a new
generation of cartoons were born and these cartoons were made by famous
animators like Walt Disney, Chuck Jones and Tex Avery they introduced new
styles of animation with original ideas funny slapstick humour and loveable
hilarious memorable characters. At that time people the cartoons received a lot
of acclaim from audiences and the animation industries were very successful to make
a lot of cartoons. They brought a lot of new styles of animation to a bigger
audience for kids and adults to enjoy and created new sound effects and
slapstick humour.
Famous animators like Walt Disney, Chuck Jones and Tex Avery
are now considered to be some of the greatest animators in American animation
many of their shorts won academy awards and a lot of modern animators have
gained a lot of influence from them.
Two animated cartoons I will talk about are Mickey Mouse
cartoons made by Walt Disney and cartoon shorts made by Tex Avery. The
differences between these animated series is that the Walt Disney shorts were
bright, cheerful and they seemed to appeal to a much younger audience mostly
these shorts dint have just slapstick comedy but they featured a lot of singing
and dancing giving them mostly musical feel also and increased the child like
reputation. The Tex Avery shorts featured a lot of fast paced slapstick comedy
and characters with hilarious personalities that would become well known among the
animation industry. These cartoons mostly focused on slapstick humour and were
aimed for a wider audience of not just children but adults also.
I think the key for the success of Walt Disney cartoons is
that they wanted to see how successful they could aim cartoons for a child
audience and they also show their techniques of musical scenes and with their
fun loving attitude in the cartoons the company became well-loved among the
audience.
Walt Disney Tex Avery
The key to Tex Avery success of his cartoons is that he made
cartoons that were not just able to make children laugh but he could make a lot
of adults laugh thanks to the slapstick style he had and the characters he had
in them. While the Walt Disney characters had cute and cuddly looks Tex Avery
characters had more adult personalities.
These pictures show the differences
between the styles of the tex Avery cartoon on the right and the Walt Disney
cartoon on the left. Tex Avery one shows fast paced slapstick comedy with
normal looking cartoon characters while Walt Disney one shows cute looking
character and frequent musical numbers.
With these famous cartoons I have talked about I shall use
them to inspire my own cartoon that I will be making during the project. The
key aspect of the Walt Disney cartoons I have watched is that in most of the
old black and white shorts the characters like Mickey Mouse are shown to have
cute look with big shiny eyes and many of their body parts are flexible like
there’s no bones in them which makes them twist around and pull to bring out
some humour, this character I plan to make in my animation will have the look
of a Disney look character and will have the same inspired cute looks, another
cartoon character from the golden age of animation Felix the cat had similar
looks thanks to his eyes and cheerful smile despite not being made by Disney
though some of his looks are also inspiration to my characters face I plan to
make. The slapstick style and comedy in my animation are going to be inspired
from the Tex Avery cartoon shorts since their slapstick was fast paced and had
a lot of funny facial expressions for example the unnamed wolf that appeared in
a Tex Avery cartoon flirting at a female singer in a restaurant had a lot of
funny facial expressions with eyes popping out which is what I want to use in
the animation.
I could learn a new style of making the animation since it’s
going to be made in 3D computer graphics but the feel of the old cartoons from
the golden age will still remain, this shows that by making cartoon characters
and style on a 3D animation program it could still keep the golden age of
animation alive with its humour and style.
