Graded Unit 2 Project

INTRDOUCTION

WHAT IS THIS PROJECT ABOUT?

It started when I was given two choices of a brief the first brief was to make a special effects project for a stage play on the 3D animation program 3dsmax and the second choice was to make your own brief. I chose the second idea because I thought it would be easier for me to do.

So I decided to make my own 3D Animation project and I thought of making a 3D Animation based on a public service announcement. there are different service announcements but the one I chose were ones that were against illegal drugs. so in this project I am making a 3D animation showing why drugs are bad and setting an example of what effects it can have. this page will show all my different ideas like mood boards, sketches and screenshots based around the project.

The announcement was inspired from different announcements I saw on TV and the internet like the road safety adverts, drink driving and smoking.

WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?

its set in a dark gritty dirty looking apartment in London where a drug user named Alan hears knocking at the door and opens it. he meets up with his friend Mark who has come over to have a bit of entertainment with drugs because he's had such a bad day at college. they sit down together and Alan offers him Heroin needles they both inject the needles into their arms and talk about how good it feels. the effects on the drugs begin. they feel very relaxed. Mark is starting to sweat and sees the room turning about due to his dizzy eyesight. the room suddenly changes from gritty to very colourful and fantasy like. the walls disappear and it shows a big beach with surreal objects and scenery based on the art of Salvador Dali. Mark seems to enjoy it at first but starts to feel pains in his heart and even sweats a lot more. he turns over to Alan who keeps talking complete rubbish since he's too high when he looks at Alan's face it suddenly turns from normal to a scary looking reptile face even his voice starts changing. Mark is so disgusted and scared that he panics while Alan is confused and wondering what's wrong. it then shows Mark vomiting in the toilet and he feels so weak that he lies on the floor and suddenly feels his heart stopping he passes out. Alan then comes into the bathroom wondering if he's ok but shockingly discovers he's not replying he goes down and feels his body and cries in mourning as he realises that Mark is dead.

This story is supposed to be aimed at Drug users themselves and show them why taking drugs is bad. it even shows the examples of the effects of what drugs can do to you.

WHY DRUG CAMPAGINS CAN BE INEFFECTIVE

Not everyone is effected towards anti drug campaigns. There are many reasons why they don’t work, for example one campaign was criticised for talking too much about one drug than any other drugs which is wrong because they need to focus on more than just one drug since there’s a lot of other drugs that ruin peoples lives. In 1999 a group of high school teenagers criticised a national drug campaign for its messages it was aiming at for example one picture showed a baby carrying with sharp glass and they felt it had nothing to with drugs only talking more about safety near a child. They have felt these advertisements have dulled the messages down and should be explained properly.

THE INTERPRETATION

In this project I have been required to make my own personal brief. The brief that I have made up is to make a 3D animated 35 second anti-drugs Public service announcement for television. In order to make it look good and well animated, I have to make it look serious enough just like a real anti-drugs announcement that is serious and is able to show the viewer’s why drugs are dangerous and can control your life. The announcement must show a good example of what drugs can do to you and I intend to make it look as realistic and scary as possible. I plan to give the audience a really strong message through the announcement. This animation won’t just enhance my animation skills but it also helps other similar community health campaigns.

AIMS

·         Making the animated announcement look serious and have a lot of emotion to make it look realistic

·         Improve the character modelling designs and make them more real life like than the previous modelling I did during the other projects

·         Have good voice acting and narration

·         Improved lip synching

·         Working towards the schedule

OBJECTIVES FOR THE AIMS

In order to achieve these aims I will be doing a lot of research for inspiration enabling me to know what kind of serious tone the animation needs. In order to make the voice acting realistic and talented I will practice my voice using a Dictaphone until I make the voice acting good enough. Looking up YouTube for videos on animation tutorials and using the tutor’s tutorials should be able to help me achieve these aims on improving the characters and lip synching. Another important aim I need to achieve is getting the animation done at the right time and schedule. To do this I will check the schedule list every week to stay aware of when each task is due. When I have finished that task in the schedule I will tick it off to remind myself that the task has been done.

INDENTIFICATION OF RESEARCH AND RESOURCE

To research ideas it’s important that I use websites like Google to look up pictures for ideas of the mood, theme and atmosphere of the animation. I can use Google also to research what the characters will be like. A lot of campaign announcements on anti-drugs are shown on YouTube so watching a lot of the most serious and effective ones will give me some ideas and inspiration. There are also websites that support anti-drugs like drugfree.org and drugs health.gov.au. Websites like these will give me a lot of inspiration and improve my ideas on how to make it more relevant. Since I am doing voice acting for this animation I will need to use the soundproof room for the voice recording and most importantly the recording equipment. I will also use the audio network to research different music and sounds I could use in the animation.

PLAN DETAILING

In order to access the sound proof room and recording equipment I will need the help of the tutor to gain access. I will also need their support to get the equipment up and running. The soundproof rooms will be useful to stop any other sounds interfering with the recording however I will still need to make my voice clear and understandable.

PROJECT SCHEDULE

 ·         Research ideas
·         Drawing sketches, character designs and area of setti

PRODUCTION (12th February)

·         Thumbnails
·         Storyboards
·         Asset Creation
·         Animatics ( no later than 4th March)

FINAL ANIMATION (18th March)
·         Animating on 3ds max
·         Rendering

EVALUATION REPORT (26TH April)

n order to make sure I have finished each of the tasks above I must check the schedule list each week and complete the task before the scheduled date. That way I will be able to get them all done in time. Finishing a group of production tasks in in a few days or weeks before the scheduled dates will give me a lot of time until the date they are supposed to be finished at. Another way to make sure that I am on track with the project is to keep updating the blog with as much of my ideas. I will also keep drawing as much sketches and ideas as I can and upload them onto the blog too. I have 3ds max at home which means I will be able to develop my ideas at home.

 WEBSITES FOR CAMPAGINS

TALK TO FRANK CAMPAGIN

This campaign has received criticism because of false information of drugs and focusing more on Harm reduction and risk minimisation. To avoid this type of error in my anti drugs annoucment I must give out very truthful information on drugs.

JUST SAY NO

This campagin worked a lot in the 1980s so many groups based around it were being made in high schools and drug use on people was reducing like cannabis use, Cocaine use and a lot of other drugs. It mostly gave a lot of inspiration to high school students.

MOODBOARDS FOR THE PROJECT

This Moodboard is for the mood and atmosphere of the animation

Drug user moodboard

Main character moodboard

SKETCHES FOR THE GRADED UNIT

These sketches are various drawings I did to bring my ideas to life. It shows sketches of the two characters in the animation. the one with the normal looking face is the main character and the one with the beard is the drug user who gives the other character the drugs.

SOME PLANNED SKETCHES I MADE FOR THE ENVIROMENT

The sketches here are pose sheets for the characters I drew the poses are going to be featured in the animation .

SOME SKETCHES I MADE

This Sketch is for the Livingroom apartment.

This sketch shows the changes the second characters face goes during an acid trip

This is the final drawing of the environment in the apartmant

These are Final Character designs for both of the characters. they will be like this in the final animation

This is sketches of the characters with colour added on them using pencils.

TEXTURES IN THE ANIMATION

Texture for the wall of the apartment block

Texture for the floor of the apartmant
the secondary character will be wearing a shirt with a smiley icon like this one above

Texture for the sofa

Texture for the sandy ground during the hallucination trip

This mapping above is for Alan. what I did was highlight all the polygons on the charecter model activated the UVW unwrap and rendered the template onto photoshop. Then I coloured all the polygons in even adding the smiley texture onto his body and then allt he colours were added on the model.

This unwrap is for the main charecter Mark to make that, I did the same instructions for the unwrap on Alan.

ALTERNATIVE SOLLUTIONS FOR THE STORY:

These are alternative solutions and ideas for the animation I wrote on the sketchbook

TEST VIDEOS

This video is three shots of walk cycles I did for one of the charecters in the animation the first shot is from perspective view, second shot is side view and third shot is closeup of the feet walking.

ENVIROMENT SCREENSHOTS

These are screenshots of the environment in the animation. it shows a gritty looking apartment with a sofa, pool table, television and another table showing playing cards.

This is a screenshot from the hallucination scene. it has a desert with some weird eye moving about and pyramids growing out. this is meant to be a pretty weird sequence in order to follow what hallucinations or dreams are like.
